Security Careers Overview

In an age where security both online and offline is a constant concern, the demand for professionals skilled in security measures is always on the rise. Professionals with careers in security will need to be diligent, fast-acting, innovative, and have excellent problem-solving skills. Since the ubiquity of technology has broadened the arenas where security is necessary, professionals can work at a number of dynamic occupations, from traditional security guards to computer system administrators.

Security Education

Careers in security have some of the most varied educational requirements for applicants. The following, more traditional security jobs require only a high school education or equivalent: Security Guard, Gaming Surveillance Officer, Police, Detective, Private Investigator, and Correctional Officer. However, those interested in digital security will often need an educational background in Computer Sciences or a field specifically related to the relevant type of security jobs.

Security Job Market

Essentially any time you read about security breaches in the newspaper, you can count on the demand for these professionals going up. This demand has even inspired many colleges and universities to implement their own cyber security education programs, including Northern Kentucky University, the University of Cincinnati, University of Maryland University College, and the George Washington University.

The U.S. Department of Labor estimated a growth of more than 65,000 jobs for security analysts, web developers, and computer network architects. Overall, the job growth anticipated for the field of security is around 22%. A study by Burning Glass International Inc. reported that the demand for cyber security experts is growing at a rate 12 times that of the job market as a whole.

Security Salaries

Since security jobs themselves are so varied, their subsequent salaries span a wide range. The traditional type of security jobs, including Police, Detectives, Security Guards, and Surveillance Officers can earn anywhere from $24,000 to $60,000 per year– and that s all with the same minimum high school education requirement. Salaries for cyber security careers start a bit higher, with annual earnings starting at $40,000 and even exceeding $100,000.
